As of this writing, the COVID-19 outbreak has had an enormous effect on all of us, and life has changed drastically. The situation is intense but we will make it through! #andràtuttobene or at least we hope so!

Over the past few weeks, I have spent my time working a distance with the rest of the team, but since day 1 I knew I wanted Serà to do its part to contribute to the crisis relief. So in March, when all of this started, we decided to do donate part of the revenues of the month to the San Raffaele Hospital of Milan to help them to get through it.

Then we started developing personal use face masks because at some point it was clear that this storm wasn't going to pass so quickly.

Adjusting to this "new normality" will not be easy, and going around with a mask will be shocking at first (I hope we will gradually adapt, and eventually won't need to use them anymore) and I thought that if we are wearing something colored and in silk, it will be a little bit nicer (and stylish of course). So I created this limited edition silk face mask using our archived fabrics.

[A little behind-the-scenes: Since I am home with my family, they have become my design team and helped me in product development. My mother has helped me cut fabrics to and develop the very first prototypes and my father has been a wonderful model!

Since our factories are closed and we cannot print new silk, we have tapped into our product archives and used some of our most popular prints that we already had for these new products. So not only this felt like the best choice not to waste any fabric stock in this period and use it for a common purpose, but you may be able to match with your favorite tie, pocket square, or scarf!

When life begins to return to normal, it may be required that we wear masks. But we can make wearing them less of a drag by being responsible, yet still classy and stylish. Now more than ever, don't forget that face masks make a statement!

Serà Fine Silk - face masks fabrics

I took great care in designing a washable mask that can be used repeatedly and will not end up as trash but is still effective. You can wash them with a soft detergent and max 40° water.

We created two models of masks: a three-layer silk mask model with a more limited duration and a silk cover mask with an interchangeable filter.

Above: on the left the folded model with spun-bonded non-woven 100% polypropylene, on the right the model with a pocket for interchangeable filters

The three-layer model:

I created a three-layer model for the best possible protection and safety for a nonmedical mask: the external layer is made of 100% silk, the middle layer is a filter made of spun-bonded non-woven 100% polypropylene and the inner layer is made of 100% jersey cotton for a soft feel against the face.

The face mask with filter pocket:

This mask can be opened to replace the Spunbonded non-woven 100% Polypropylene filter inside, and with every piece 5 filters are included.

The masks are not intended to replace medical grade equipment but can offer protection by covering nose and mouth from droplets, dust, and other airborne particles.

So, of course, please continue to practice social distancing and washing your hands (also before and after handling your mask): it's still the best way to keep yourself and your beloved ones as safe as possible!
